Guyana, China identify new areas for deeper cooperation – PM Phillips
Prime Minister Brigadier (Ret’d) Mark Phillips said Guyana and the People’s Republic of China have built a multifaceted relationship over more than five decades, with opportunities for further cooperation in areas aligned with the development priorities of the countries.
Prime Minister Phillips made the remarks on Thursday evening at a reception hosted by the Embassy of the People’s Republic of China to commemorate China’s National Day and the 77th anniversary of the founding of the People’s Republic of China.
Prime Minister Phillips congratulated President Xi Jinping, the Government and people of China on behalf of the Government and people of Guyana, noting that the occasion comes as Guyana celebrates its 60th anniversary of Independence and the two countries mark 54 years of diplomatic relations.
Meanwhile, reflecting on the bilateral relationship with Guyana and China, the Prime Minister highlighted cooperation in infrastructure, healthcare, agriculture, education, transportation and human resource development.
The Bharrat Jagdeo Demerara River Bridge was constructed by China Railway Construction Corporation International, and the six regional hospitals project.
He said these were examples of the practical benefits while also acknowledging the contributions of Chinese medical teams to Guyana over the years.
The PM further noted that Guyana’s continued economic diversification creates scope for increased trade and commercial engagement with China.
He said opportunities also exist for greater people-to-people exchanges, including through the Chinese Government Scholarship Programme and other training and capacity-building initiatives.
Speaking on the possibilities ahead, the PM identified sustainable urban development, renewable energy, smart infrastructure, modern transportation and urban planning, and agriculture, food processing and agricultural technology.
Fisheries, aquaculture, marine science and environmental protection were also highlighted as potential areas of engagement between institutions, universities, enterprises and technical partners in both countries.
“The question before us is not simply what we have achieved together, but what more we can accomplish together,” Prime Minister Phillips said, adding that the existing relationship provides a strong foundation for both countries to pursue new opportunities for cooperation and mutual benefit.
“As China marks the 77th Anniversary of the founding of the People’s Republic of China, Guyana looks forward with confidence to working alongside China to build a future that is more prosperous, more resilient, more sustainable, and more inclusive,” the prime minister said.
