Nvidia CEO emphasizes US, China economic, technological ties

(MENAFN) The CEO of American tech company Nvidia, Jensen Huang, has argued that the idea of the United States decoupling from China is fundamentally flawed, emphasizing that the economic and technological connections between Beijing and Washington are far stronger than commonly perceived.

“The idea that floated around about US decoupling from China, I think, is flawed, and our dependency on each other is quite significant and it’s deeper than people think,” Huang said in a video interview.

Huang also pointed to the global reliance of the artificial intelligence (AI) sector on Chinese talent, noting that “the brilliant students and the brilliant scientists of China” play a crucial role, and that around half of the world’s AI researchers are from China or have Chinese roots.

Tensions between the world’s two largest economies have persisted amid mutual accusations. Washington has repeatedly criticized China for practices such as intellectual property theft and forced technology transfer, while Beijing has condemned US export controls as politicizing trade, disrupting global supply chains, and harming all parties involved.

US export regulations on advanced AI chips, including Nvidia’s H200 chip tailored for China, had long restricted shipments to the country under national security rules. In December 2025, former US President Donald Trump partially reversed the ban, allowing exports of the H200 to “approved” Chinese customers under a regulated licensing system with a 25% fee to the US government.

Earlier actions by the US Department of Commerce had placed 32 foreign entities, including 23 Chinese companies, on a trade blacklist. Two of these firms were accused of using US equipment to produce chips for China’s leading chipmaker, SMIC. Washington argued the measures were necessary to protect fair trade and national security, while Beijing condemned the sanctions and initiated anti-dumping and anti-discrimination investigations into US chip policies.
