China Declares Support for Venezuela's UN Emergency Appeal
"China supports Venezuela's request to convene an emergency meeting of the UN Security Council," Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Guo Jiakun stated during a Beijing press briefing.
Guo asserted China "opposes all forms of unilateral bullying and supports countries in safeguarding their sovereignty and national dignity," the Beijing-based publication Global Times reported.
"Venezuela has the right to independently develop mutually beneficial cooperation with other countries," he declared, noting China "believes the international community understands and supports Venezuela's position in defending its legitimate rights and interests."
Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro additionally conferred with UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres Wednesday regarding heightening regional strains.
Guterres reaffirmed the UN's stance "on the need for member states to respect international law, particularly the UN Charter, exert restraint and de-escalate tensions to preserve regional stability," a UN statement confirmed.
Throughout the previous four months, US forces have sustained an expanding military footprint in the Caribbean, executing operations against ships allegedly involved in narcotics smuggling, though no supporting evidence has been made public. US President Donald Trump has additionally indicated US military forces might execute ground operations on Venezuelan soil.
The confrontation intensified dramatically last week when US forces commandeered a sanctioned petroleum vessel near Venezuela's coastline, an action Caracas condemned as "international piracy."
Maduro cautioned Tuesday about the danger of a "new Vietnam" following Trump's directive for a "total and complete blockade" of sanctioned oil tankers accessing or departing Venezuela.
